My hope is that the information that I provide on this website will help to make teachers' jobs a little easier! There are so many resources on the internet that are solid and effective, but there are also a SO many that are not. I have pulled out, what I believe are, the some of the most relevant (to Kindergarten math) websites, pages, activities, books, videos and lesson plan ideas that I have researched thus far...There is SO much more to be found! I will absolutely continue to post more sites and resources that I find! I will also periodically make sure that the links that I have provided are current and guide you directly to where is promised! I have tried to provide sites that are free or free to join.
ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS PREVIEW ANYTHING YOU ARE GOING TO SHARE
WITH YOUR STUDENTS! I HAVE TRIED TO INCLUDE ADVERTISEMENT WARNINGS WITH THE INTERACTIVE SITES, HOWEVER THE INTERNET IS ALWAYS FULL OF SURPRISES!
Please visit the possibilities of blocking advertisements that are included on these pages.
There are more general resource ideas/links to help with all of the strands of kindergarten math posted on the "additional valuable links" page. Please check them out!
OTHER EFFECTIVE IDEAS FOR TEACHING MATH:
WORD WALLS INCLUDING MATH SYMBOLS AND VOCABULARY
Always display words and symbols that are used in math on a bulletin board in the classroom. Word walls are a wonderful opportunity for learning without "realizing they are learning".
MATH PROBLEMS OF THE WEEK
Give students a "challenging" math problem to solve every week. They can take a week to solve the problem and work with a partner or in a group. Allow ten minutes specific days of the week for students to work on their problem. There can be one problem for the entire class or differentiated problems for various math levels. Even if they get the problem incorrect, they should be rewarded for effort (maybe a sticker or prize out the treasure box).
MATH SHOW-N-TELL
Have students bring in items from home that have to do with math. When they share their items, they must tell "why" their item relates to math.
A student could bring in a shoe box and explain about the sides and corners.
Choose a specific time/day and amount of children to share each week.
