These are some sample lessons and activities that you can use for each VA SOL in the Probability & Statistics strand. These sites are linked to where you can download these lessons/activities and any corresponding printables. I suggest adapting these lessons and activities to fit the needs of your class and your teaching style.
Within each sample, one of the "relevant texts" from the previous page will be suggested for reading to your students BEFORE each lesson. Feel free to use your own book choices! The lessons will appear in order of the Standards of Learning (K.13 & K.14) the way that I think they should be taught. Again, feel free to teach in the order that you feel is appropriate.
*There are ALWAYS sample lesson plans straight from the VA DOE website. Simply:
1. Go to www.doe.virginia.gov
2. Click on "Tests & Standards of Learning (on left).
3. Click on "Standards of Learning (SOL)" (in the center text).
4. Click on "Mathematics" (on right).
5. Click on "Enhanced Scope & Sequence Sample Lesson Plans" (center in chart).
6. Type in "Computation and Estimation".
7. Check the "K box" for kindergarten.
8. Click "search". Sample plans for SOLs will appear!

Student Tally Mark Lesson Idea
http://www.lessonthis.com/math/hugs-and-tallies/
Students physically represent tally marks by standing close together. This is an effective way to get students moving and learning!
NOTES:
Make sure to talk about "what" tally marks represent and "why" we use them (data collection).
Both of the above resources use valuable, kinesthetic teaching strategies.
Incorporating tally mark data collection into an everyday format (morning routine) is a fantastic way to get students to become very familiar and comfortable with the concept.
PRINTABLES/OTHER ACTIVITIES/MATERIALS: Using these worksheets/activities/materials during whole class/independent work time (in school or at home) is a way to incorporate them into your lessons as reinforcement activities. There are more sites included in the "assessments" and the "interactive sites for kids" pages.
