These are some sample lessons and activities that you can use for each VA SOL in the Patterns, Functions, and Algebra strand. These sites are linked to where you can download these lessons/activities and any corresponding printables. I suggest adapting these lessons and activities to fit the needs of your class and your teaching style.
Within each sample, one of the "relevant texts" from the previous page will be suggested for reading to your students BEFORE each lesson. Feel free to use your own book choices! The lessons will appear in order of the Standards of Learning (K.6) the way that I think they should be taught. Again, feel free to teach in the order that you feel is appropriate.
*There are ALWAYS sample lesson plans straight from the VA DOE website. Simply:
1. Go to www.doe.virginia.gov
2. Click on "Tests & Standards of Learning (on left).
3. Click on "Standards of Learning (SOL)" (in the center text).
4. Click on "Mathematics" (on right).
5. Click on "Enhanced Scope & Sequence Sample Lesson Plans" (center in chart).
6. Type in "Computation and Estimation".
7. Check the "K box" for kindergarten.
8. Click "search". Sample plans for SOLs will appear!

Lessons Idea-Number 1
VA SOL: K.15
BOOK: Sorting by Henry Author Pluckrose
LESSON/ACTIVITY IDEAS:
Sorting by Attributes Lesson Ideas
http://www.kindergartenkindergarten.com/sorting-by-attributes/
This page offers sorting lesson ideas and materials to make teaching and learning this concept simple, fun, and engaging. The ideas progress as the students' understanding of the concepts are grasped.
Sorting Ideas
http://www.hubbardscupboard.org/sort_and_classify.html
This page has ideas of items to sort and how to sort them. I particularly like the sorting of small objects into ice cube trays. This page is short and sweet!
NOTES:
The printable mats (PDF) that are on the Hubbards Cupboard site can be easily printed and laminated for multiple uses in the classroom. The mates are differentiated for various types of categorizing.
Spend some time Venn Diagrams with the students that you feel are up for the challenge. There is a really cute game included on the "interactive sites for kids page that involves this type of sorting.
These and other sorting lessons are good extension lessons to geometry. Taking the shapes that the students have learned about, sorting, and categorizing them by attributes can be reinforced in this strand.
PRINTABLES/OTHER ACTIVITIES/MATERIALS:Using these worksheets/activities/materials during whole class/independent work time (in school or at home) is a way to incorporate them into your lessons as reinforcement activities. There are more sites included in the "assessments" and the "interactive sites for kids" pages.
Sorting and Categorizing Worksheets
http://www.education.com/worksheets/sorting-categorizing/
There are 92 Sorting and Categorizing worksheets offered on this page on the Education.com website. The worksheets are described as preschool level, however I feel that they are appropriate for kindergarten as well.

It's a Pattern by Marianne Waering Penn
LESSON/ACTIVITY IDEAS:
Patterning Ideas and Guidelines
http://www.kindergarten-lessons.com/kindergarten-pattern-activities.html
This page offers educationally sound ideas and guidelines for teaching patterns to kindergarten. There are ideas for patterning lessons as well as uses for classroom management.
Patterning Lesson Ideas
http://mrskilburnkiddos.wordpress.com/math/patterning/
This is a great page for simple lesson ideas for teaching patterns. This page includes printable worksheets and links to other lesson ideas.
More Patterning Lesson Ideas
http://teachers.net/lessons/posts/2031.html
This page offers lesson ideas for teaching patterns. This page emphasizes the importance of having students make patterns out of as many different concrete objects as possible (not just colors). I like the creative ideas for hand making items to put into patterns (and for sorting).
Patterning Activities
http://www.vcsc.k12.in.us/th/interim/PatterningActivities.htm
This link comes directly from Mrs. Kilburn's Kiddo's website (above). The activities described involve kinesthetic strategies (clapping patterns) that are very effective and engaging for the students.
NOTES:
Be sure to use the items that you have sorted in Lesson Ideas-1 (k.15) for these lessons as well. The students should make connections between sorting and patterning combining parts of both lesson ideas for K.15 and K.16. This will help to reinforce both concepts.
Patterning Worksheets
http://www.kidzone.ws/prek_wrksht/math-readiness/patterns.htm
There are a variety of patterning worksheets from easiest to hardest on this page.
