These are some sample lessons and activities that you can use for each VA SOL in the Geometry strand. These sites are linked to where you can download these lessons/activities and any corresponding printables. I suggest adapting these lessons and activities to fit the needs of your class and your teaching style.
Within each sample, one of the "relevant texts" from the previous page will be suggested for reading to your students BEFORE each lesson. Feel free to use your own book choices! The lessons will appear in order of the Standards of Learning (K.11 a, b and K.12) the way that I think they should be taught. Again, feel free to teach in the order that you feel is appropriate.
*There are ALWAYS sample lesson plans straight from the VA DOE website. Simply:
1. Go to www.doe.virginia.gov
2. Click on "Tests & Standards of Learning (on left).
3. Click on "Standards of Learning (SOL)" (in the center text).
4. Click on "Mathematics" (on right).
5. Click on "Enhanced Scope & Sequence Sample Lesson Plans" (center in chart).
6. Type in "Computation and Estimation".
7. Check the "K box" for kindergarten.
8. Click "search". Sample plans for SOLs will appear!

Lesson Idea-Number 1
VA SOL:K.11(a)
BOOK: A Circle Here, A Square There by David Diehl.
LESSON/ACTIVITY IDEA:
Identifying Shapes (circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles) in their Environment
http://sites.google.com/site/mebrook05/lesson-plans/kindergarten-geometry
This is a lesson plan that includes identifying cones and spheres in addition to the four shapes that are to be covered in K.11-a. This is an effective and engaging lesson plan that, by taking out the cones and spheres component, can be used as an introduction to identification of shapes.
NOTES:
Make sure to modify this lesson to only include the four plane shapes included in this standard of learning (if it is appropriate to your state or school's set objectives).
Printing shapes onto card stock paper, cutting, and then laminating them is a cost effective way to make shapes for the students to use during this lesson (and can be reused for other lessons!).
There is an additional lesson plan for K.11(a) included on the "Lessons by Mrs. Roman" page of my website. Click on "Shapes Lesson 1" to view and print out. Please feel free to modify this lesson to fit the needs of your students and according to the set objectives of your state or school. I have the book Shapes, Shapes, Shapes by Tana Hoban as the book to read at the beginning of the lesson. It is appropriate to use any of the three books included on the "relevant texts" page of my website.
PRINTABLES/OTHER ACTIVITIES/MATERIALS:Using these worksheets/activities/materials during whole class/independent work time (in school or at home) is a way to incorporate them into your lessons as reinforcement activities. There are more sites included in the "assessments" and the "interactive sites for kids" pages.
The lesson plan idea above includes three worksheets in Google Docs that can be printed and used as effective worksheets to accompany this lesson. The icons to click are at the bottom of the lesson plan.
I have included worksheets and templates for shapes and shape mats on the "Lessons by Mrs. Roman page of my website. Click on "Shapes Lesson 1" to view and print out.
Circle, Square, Triangle, and Rectangle Tracing Worksheets http://havefunteaching.com/worksheets/math-worksheets/geometry-worksheets/
This page on the Have Fun Teaching website includes nine different worksheets that are easily printable, level appropriate for kindergarten, and specific to introducing and reinforcing geometry concepts (shapes) to students. The tracing worksheets on this page include circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles. These sheets are appropriate to use with both of the suggested lesson plans above.

Lesson Ideas-Number 2
VA SOL:K.11 (b) & K.12
BOOKS: Shapes, Shapes, Shapes by Tana Hoban
Color Zoo by Lois Ehlert
LESSON/ACTIVITY IDEAS:
Analyzing and Comparing Shapes Lesson
http://www.lessoncorner.com/l/alisasingh/ShapesIntroduction
This is a lesson plan that can be used to allow students to explore the shapes that they are learning about on a more analytical level. There are opportunities to sort and chart shapes by similarities and differences. There are some shapes included in this lesson that are not included in the Geometry Virginia Standards of Learning. This lesson is easily modifiable to fit the needs of your students and your set state/school objectives.
Shape Scavenger Hunt Lesson
http://education.csm.edu/students/kplotz/Technology/plan.htm
This is a lesson plan that includes using a Sesame Street interactive computer game (direct URL link included on the "interactive sites for kids" page) to have students discover different shapes of different sizes and spacial orientation. The book that is suggested for this lesson plan can be used or replaced with the two suggested books above. There is a link included in this lesson plan that will take you to the Sesame Street website, but your are directed to an incorrect game. The game is called "Telly's Shape Garden" and can be found easily by clicking the "Games" icon on the top tool bar.
NOTES:
The Scavenger Hunt lesson includes a similar activity to my Shapes Lesson 1 lesson plan. You may choose to save the "classroom discovery" portion of my Shapes Lesson 1 plan for the final lesson suggested in this section.I believe that some time should be spent during any of the above lessons comparing squares and rectangles, and circles and ovals specifically. These shapes are similar to one another, and their differences need to be addressed. There is a worksheet included in the "assessments" page to help address these comparisons.
The Geometry Virginia Standards of Learning require that "angles" be addressed in terms of how many "angles" are in a specific shape. Many of the lessons I have found teach the concept of angles as "corners" at the kindergarten level. I feel that the term "corner" may be easier for kindergarten students to relate to. Corners/angles should be addressed as part of comparing shapes. There is a worksheet included in the "assessments" page to help address this concept. There are also two activities included on the "interactive sites for kids" page.

There are more sites included in the "assessments" and the "interactive sites for kids" pages.
